Thefts could result in motor insurance claims
According to figures released by the RAC Auto Windscreens, a 23 per cent rise in smash and grab attacks of side windscreens was recorded last year, potentially resulting in motor insurance claims.
In addition, 40 per cent of drivers have admitted to leaving their valuables on show in their vehicles despite one car theft occurring every 22 seconds, the motoring service provider states.
Spokesperson Adam Cracknell comments: "Today's cars are treasure troves packed with the latest technology and gadgets making them a target for theft."
Drivers who do not properly secure their cars before they are burgled may also find that they cannot make a claim on their car insurance, he warned.
According to the RAC, one in ten cars contains items worth more than £1,000, with a quarter having satellite navigation equipment, a fifth used to transport a laptop and three-quarters containing a mobile phone.
Police in Merseyside recently warned drivers to be on their guard after 66 satellite navigation units were stolen from cars over the last week - potentially resulting in motor insurance claims.
Consumers could save up to £231.92 on their car insurance premiums with Kwik-Fit Insurance, according to research conducted last year.
